With an operational need for their headquarters to be located closer to the Department of Interior and the National Mall, and a desire for a flagship facility that would incorporate a public museum and auditorium while meeting sustainability goals, the National Park Service (NPS) commissioned the services of OLBN.
OLBN developed a comprehensive study to evaluate the feasibility of the historic South Interior Building (SIB), listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to serve as NPS’ new headquarters facility. Conceptual site plans, test fits, and renderings analyzing multiple options for space standards, code compliance improvements, and programmatic alterations were developed. OLBN’s team assembled a preliminary LEED checklist and cost analysis for recommendations in accordance with the NPS mission and policies.
